A mail returning device and a mail sorting device are provided to detect a gap between the mails at an inlet side of a returning path in order to send the mail to a specific space after classification. A mail returning device and a mail sorting device comprise a returning unit, an inlet side measuring unit(27), an outlet side measuring unit(28), a computing unit(31), a comparing unit(32) and a controlling unit(33). The returning unit returns mails to a returning path at regular intervals. The inlet side measuring unit measures the passing time of the mail based on a point of the time when the mail passes through an inlet. The outlet side measuring unit measures the passing time of the mail based on a point of the time when the mail passes through an outlet. The computing unit computes the passing time of the mail to pass a specific space based on the point of the time when mail passes through the inlet and outlet side measuring units. The comparing unit compares the passing time computed by the computing unit and the preset passing time. The controlling unit controls a gap amending unit(30) in order to change the returning speed of the mail based on the reference value compared by the comparing unit.
