Vinyl polymers are plasticized by the addition of a mono- or dihydroxy alkylamide of a substituted or unsubstituted benzene sulphonic acid. Examples are benzene, toluene, xylene and cumene sulphonic acid hydroxyethyl and dihydroxy ethyl amides, ethyl-, butyl-, octyl-, dodecyl-, cyclohexyl-, benzyl- and phenyl-benzene sulphonic acid mono- or dihydroxy ethylamides and similar compounds obtained from benzene derivatives containing long alkyl chains and/or substituents such as halogen, alkoxy, nitro or acyl groups, e.g. p-chlorobenzene sulphonic acid-b -propanolamide, 3-nitro-benzene sulphonic acid dihydroxyethylamide, 2-chloro-4-methoxy benzene sulphonic acid hydroxyethylamide and 4-caproyl benzene sulphonic acid - b - propanolamide. Specified polymers are those of vinyl chloride, which may also be after-chlorinated, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloroacetate, vinyl alkyl ethers and thioethers, vinyl acetylene, divinyl acetylene, vinyl alkyl ketones, and acrylic and methacrylic acid esters. The polymer and plasticizer may be kneaded together, e.g. at 140 DEG C. or mixed in a solvent, e.g. cyclohexanone, from which films may be cast. Glass-clear products are obtained, the softness of which may be increased by adding other plasticizers such as tricresyl phosphate or dioctyl phthalate. |
