The device (10) has an ice knife for machining an ice surface, and a spraying device (100) for applying a water film onto the ice surface. Feeding devices (50, 52) i.e. screw feeders, are arranged between a processing device (30) and the ice knife for transporting ice chips removed from the ice surface by the ice knife to the processing device. The processing device includes a device for melting the ice chips located in the processing device, where the processing device is connected to the spraying device. A water tank (40) is arranged between the processing device and the spraying device. An independent claim is also included for a method for machining an ice surface such as ice rink, with a self-operating device.
