Circular knitting machine comprising at least cylinder needles (23) or dial needles (24) which include a set of needles each having a first butt and a second butt and a switching device for switching between two needle butt engaging stitch cams (13a, 13b) each of which is for one of synchronous and delayed timing. Electromagnetic actuators (12) on a rotary cylinder (10) selectively advance one of a lowering cam (11a) and a raising cam (11b) to engage a butt of a vertically displaceable lever having grooves therein engaged by pins connected to the stitch cams (13a, 13b) whereby raising and lowering of the lever selectively advances one of the stitch cams (13a, 13b) into engagement with corresponding ones of the dial needle butts. This provides switching of the stitch timing.
