Compounds which are stated to be particularly suitable as plasticizing agents for polyvinyl synthetic resins particularly polyvinyl chloride are alkyl and aryl esters of alkyl benzene sulphonic acids, the alkyl group of which contain 1-8 carbon atoms. Compounds mentioned include n-butyl octylbenzene sulphonate, phenyl octylbenzene sulphonate phenyl xylene sulphonate, n-butyl xylene sulphonate, n-butyl-sec-butylbenzene sulphonate, and phenyl-sec-butylbenzene sulphonate.ALSO:Alkyl and aryl esters of alkyl benzene sulphonic acid are prepared by reacting alkylated benzenesulphonyl chloride, the alkyl groups containing 1-8 carbon atoms, with a hydrocarbon hydroxy compound in the presence of 35-50 per cent caustic alkali in at least 200 per cent molar excess at a temperature of 35-50 DEG C., the amount of hydroxy compound present being not more than 2 mols. per mol. of alkylated benzene sulphonyl chloride. In examples: (1) octyl benzene is made by alkylating benzene with n-octanol in the presence of boron trifluoride, then chlorsulphonated with chlorsulphonic acid and the product treated with n-butanol under the above conditions to give n-butyl-octylbenzenesulphonate; (2) octylbenzene sulphonyl chloride is reacted with phenol to give phenyl octylbenzene sulphonate; (3) xylenesulphonyl chloride is reacted with phenol to form phenyl xylenesulphonate; (4) n-butyl xylenesulphonate is formed from xylenesulphonyl chloride and n-butanol; (5) sec.-butyl benzene sulphonyl chloride is reacted with n-butanol to form n - butyl sec. - butyl benzenesulphonate; (6) phenyl sec.-butyl benzenesulphonate is formed from sec.-butyl sulphonyl chloride and phenol. In all cases the reaction conditions were adjusted within p the particular limits outlined above. The compounds are useful as plasticizers for polyvinyl synthetic resins.
