In a common mechanical control system for the clutch and brakes of a motor vehicle, in which the common control pedal is movable to actuate the clutch independently of the brakes or to actuate the clutch and brakes in succession, the control pedal and a lever connected to the brakes are freely pivoted to a rod connected to the clutch, the control pedal has an arm arranged to act on a lever connected to the clutch rod so that initial movement of the control pedal causes clutch disengagement and causes another arm of the control pedal to move toward the brake lever and further movement of the control pedal causes a portion of the first arm to ride against the free end of the clutch lever without turning the latter to hold the clutch disengaged whilst the second arm applies the brakes shortly before the clutch is fully disengaged, so that on its return movement the control pedal brakes remain applied until the restoring force of the clutch returns the control lever to its initial position. As shown, the control pedal 1 having a counterweight 5 is rotatably mounted on the clutch rod 2 carried in bearings on bars 17 secured to the frame of the vehicle. The rod 2 is connected by an arm 22, link 23, arm 21 and a rod 8 to the lever 6 which is adapted to be engaged by a member 10 on the first arm of the pedal 1. Rotatably mounted on the rod 2 is the lever 7 which operates the brakes by an abutment 14 thereon connected to the piston of a hydraulic actuating system. When the pedal 1 is first depressed the clutch is disengaged through the member 10 engaging the lever 6 and progressive movement of the pedal causes actuation of the brakes by a cross-piece 13 on the lever 7 being engaged by the pedal 1. During the actuation of the brakes the arm 6 is not further moved due to engagement with an arcuate surface 11 on the member 10. A yieldable stop may be provided to indicate when the clutch has been disengaged. The pedal 1 may be provided in addition to the normal clutch and brake pedals.</p>
