Waste fibrous nylon is treated with a degrading solvent, viz sulphuric, hydrochloric and formic acids, to destroy its filamentary nature, the degraded polymer being precipitated from the resultant mixture or solution to give a powder. Silk fibre may be added to the mixture or solution to obtain particles coated with silk fibroin. In examples: (1) nylon waste is treated with dilute H2SO4 and the solution is diluted with water to precipitate spongy granules which are washed and dried; (2) nylon waste is treated with boiling dilute HCl, silk fibre is added and an alkaline oxidizing solution is added to give a precipitate; (3) nylon waste and silk waste are dissolved in 80 per cent sulphuric acid, the mixture being reacted with a higher fatty alcohol such as stearyl alcohol and neutralized with alkali to give a product containing a precipitate which may be used as an emulsifier to make ointment bases. The products may also be used in the manufacture of semi-abrasive detergents, wetting agents, shampoos, soaps, face powders, toilet creams, dentifrices, and as a vehicle for drugs, dyes and antiseptics. Specifications 544,715 and 563,078 are referred to.
|
