A digital image processing apparatus and a control method thereof are provided to perform face recognition from the center area of an image to a peripheral area, thereby increasing face recognition speed. A digital signal processor(129) comprises the following units. A face recognizer(129-1) detects the number of faces and location information while progressing from a center area to a peripheral area. A window generator(129-2) generates a window in a detected face. The generated window is displayed on the input image. The face recognizer performs face recognition while crossing the center area of the input image. The face recognizer alternatively recognizes an upper area and a lower area of the peripheral area.
