A terminal and a controlling method thereof are provided to enable a user to select a type of a character inputted on an idle screen, so that the user can select and input a type of a desired character on the idle screen. A user input unit(130) includes a key button for selecting one of menus where inputted characters are usable. A controller(180) controls so that types of the inputted characters are selected on an idle screen. When the characters are inputted, the controller displays a window where the inputted characters are marked. If all of the inputted characters are deleted, the controller controls so that the window disappears. The controller controls so that icons for menu selection are displayed on a display screen.
