The method involves controlling cylinders to permit operation of an air pump to inject air in an exhaust gas conduit, during heating phase. The cylinders are operated for allowing the operation of the air pump by stopping fuel injection. The air pump operation is controlled by activating inlet valves and exhaust valves. The cylinders pumping power are optimized by utilizing an entirely variable valve control.
