PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thickener composition which has a high thickening property and a high salt tolerance, has a moist texture, and is excellent in usability, and to provide a preparation method thereof. SOLUTION: The thickener composition comprises (A) a vinyl polymer and (B) a water-soluble silane derivative expressed by formula (1): Si-(OR<SP>1</SP>)<SB>4</SB>(wherein R<SP>1</SP>is a polyhydric alcohol residue). The components (A) and (B) form a hybrid body in an aqueous system. The preparation method of the thickener composition comprises: a step of mixing the vinyl polymer and the water-soluble silane derivative in an aqueous solvent; and a step of stirring and dispersing the mixture with a homomixer.
