<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make an LED backlight device very thin and to increase the quantity of light emission by disposing a second substrate diffusing incident light so as to face a surface opposite to a surface to which an LED is fixed, of a first substrate. <P>SOLUTION: The backlight device includes: a first translucent substrate; an LED laminate thin film which is formed of an epitaxially grown inorganic material as a P-N joint device by lamination and is fixed to the first surface of the first substrate; an anode electrode and a cathode electrode formed on the LED laminate thin film; an anode driver IC and a cathode driver IC which drive the LED laminate thin film to emit light; anode wiring which is formed on the first surface of the first substrate to connect the anode driver IC and the anode electrode of the LED laminate thin film; cathode wiring which is formed on the first surface of the first substrate to connect the cathode driver IC and the cathode electrode of the LED laminate thin film; and a second substrate having translucency and a function to uniformly diffuse incident light.
