PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type display device provided with an optical component achieving the functions of illumination-projection separation and color separation-synthesis by a simple, inexpensive and compact configuration. SOLUTION: This projection type display device is provided with a color separation-synthesis prism 10 having a dichroic film 14 and a polarizing film 15 at different positions of prism junction faces 13 of the prisms 11, 12 to separate the illumination light coming in through a filter member changing the direction of polarization by selecting wavelength into a plurality of color light by the dichroic film 14 and guide the light into DMD elements 6R, 6GB for corresponding color light. A plurality of color light modulated by a plurality of DMD elements 6R, 6GB and going out from the DMD elements 6R, 6GB at angles being different from the angles at which the illumination light comes into the DMD elements 6R, 6GB is synthesized in color by the polarizing film 15 and is projected toward a projection lens.
