PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an antimicrobial agent having high antimicrobial activity and less irritation to skin, etc. SOLUTION: The antimicrobial agent consisting of a quaternary ammonium salt is expressed by general formula (1), wherein R<SP>1</SP>is a 6-24C hydrocarbon group; R<SP>2</SP>and R<SP>3</SP>are each a 1-24C hydrocarbon group which may be substituted by hydroxy; R<SP>4</SP>is a 1-3C aliphatic hydrocarbon group which may be substituted by hydroxy; R<SP>5</SP>is a 1-5C alkylene; (p) is an integer of 1 to 3; (q) and (r) are each an integer of 0 to 2; (s) is an integer of 1 to 3; (p+q+r+s)=4; and A<SP>-</SP>is an anion.
