PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for and a device of adapting an internal combustion engine capable of properly determining whether in a proper adapting measurement engine control state or not even for the engine control state where a control parameter value becomes a set limit value. SOLUTION: The region of the adapting measurement engine control state changes engine control state in turn, and the engine control state where engine operation with predetermined restriction conditions satisfied therein is performed, is determined as the adapting measurement engine control state. When determining the region in the method for and device of adapting an internal combustion engine, the engine control state is changed by gradually changing at least one control parameter value among the control parameters from an initial survey point to a set limit value. When the control parameter value becomes the set limit value while satisfying the restriction conditions and there is another control parameter not having reached the set value limit, the engine control state is further changed by gradually changing the other control parameter value to the predetermined limit value.
