<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a drive unit capable of improving operability in mounting a unit, suppressing damage of a gear, and preventing disengagement of a drive output gear and a drive transmission gear when transmitting drive, and an image forming apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: The drive unit is provided with play 22a enabling the drive output gear 16 to rotate by a prescribed amount relatively to the drive transmission gear 15 between a part to be engaged of the drive transmission gear 15 and an engaging part of the drive output gear 16.
