<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display element preventing a structure from being complicated and enlarged, and having excellent display quality when performing matrix driving, and electric equipment using the element. <P>SOLUTION: This display element 10 is provided with a top substrate (first substrate) 2, a bottom substrate (second substrate) 3, and a conductive liquid 16 which is enclosed movably to the effective display region or an ineffective display region in a space S for display formed between the top substrate (first substrate) 2 and the bottom substrate (second substrate) 3, and the display element is provided with a signal electrode 4, a reference electrode 5, and a scanning electrode 6 which are constituted independently so that a voltage within a predetermined voltage range can be applied.
