SOLUTION: A fuel property estimating device comprises a cylinder air amount calculating part 52 for calculating the amount of air in a cylinder, a reference torque calculating part 54 for calculating theoretical reference torque to be generated by the combustion of mixture having a theoretical air-fuel ratio in the cylinder, a torque fluctuation estimating part 58 for estimating a fluctuation of torque to be generated by combustion in the cylinder in accordance with the operated condition of the internal combustion engine and a prefixed reference fuel property, a cylinder torque estimating part 56 for estimating the size of torque in the cylinder generated by actual combustion in the cylinder, a cylinder torque calculating part 60 for calculating the probability distribution of the size of the torque corresponding to the fuel property in accordance with the reference torque and the fluctuation of torque to calculate probability corresponding to the size of the torque in the cylinder, and a fuel property estimating part 62 for estimating the fuel property in accordance with the probability corresponding to the size of the torque in the cylinder.
