PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lighting device and a projection video display apparatus which prevent an increase in cost of the entire apparatus, even when light beams of four colors or more are used. SOLUTION: The lighting device includes: a light source 10 that emits white light; a mirror 21, a mirror 23 and a mirror 24 configured to split light emitted from the light source into blue component light, green component light, red component light and yellow component light; a liquid crystal panel 30B, a liquid crystal panel 30G and a liquid crystal panel 30R configured to modulate respective color component light beams depending on respective color input signals; a liquid crystal panel 30Ye configured to modulate yellow component light; and a cross dichroic cube 60 configured to synthesize light beams emitted from the liquid crystal panel 30B, the liquid crystal panel 30G and the liquid crystal panel 30R.
