PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a binder resin for electrostatic image developing toner, the binder resin reliably maintaining charging property and heat resistance necessary to an electrostatic image developing toner, and capable of suppressing coloration or problems caused by byproducts, unreacted substances or the like. SOLUTION: The binder resin for the electrostatic image developing toner is obtained by polycondensation reaction of a polycarboxylic acid and a polyol, wherein a fraction from 3 mol% to less than 50 mol% of the polycarboxylic acid is expressed by formula (1) and/or formula (2), including 0 ppm to 10 ppm of metal element derived from a catalyst, and has a glass transition temperature of from 50°C to 80°C. The formulae are (1):R<SP>1</SP>OOCA<SP>1</SP><SB>m</SB>B<SP>1</SP><SB>n</SB>A<SP>1</SP><SB>l</SB>COOR<SP>1'</SP>, wherein A<SP>1</SP>represents a methylene group, B<SP>1</SP>represents an aromatic hydrocarbon residue, m, n and l satisfy 1≤m+l≤12, 1≤n≤3, each of R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>1'</SP>represents a hydrogen atom or a monovalent hydrocarbon group; and (2):R<SP>2</SP>OOCA<SP>2</SP><SB>q</SB>B<SP>2</SP><SB>r</SB>A<SP>2</SP><SB>p</SB>COOR<SP>2'</SP>, wherein A<SP>2</SP>represents a methylene group, B<SP>2</SP>represents an alicyclic hydrocarbon residue, p, q and r satisfy 0≤p≤6, 0≤q≤6 and 1≤r≤3, each of R<SP>2</SP>and R<SP>2'</SP>represents a hydrogen atom or a monovalent hydrocarbon group.
