Class 120(i) A substantially isotropic fibrous web, for the manufacture of non-woven fabric, is produced by forming a layer of fibres predominantly aligned in one direction, moving the fibres continuously in the direction of fibre alignment, progressively removing individual fibres from the advancing edge of the layer, depositing the individual fibres in an air stream, and removing them therefrom in the form of a web. As shown a feed cap in the form of a card web, or a pile of superposed card webs, from cards 24, passes down a shoot 26 and is fed by a feed lap in the form of a card web, or a lickerin-type combing cylinder 32. Instead of a card web, the feed lap may consist of a number of card slivers placed side by side. Fibres are dropped centrifugally from cylinder 32 into an air stream induced in a conduit 14 by fans 12. The air speed may be equal to or greater than the lineal speed of the lickerin teeth, to assist doffing. The fibres in the air stream are deposited on a rotary screen 10 from which they are removed in the form of a web 18.</p> |
