<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and method for automatically and adaptively controlling the transmission power level of a mobile subscriber station in a cellular-communications network using spread-spectrum modulation. <P>SOLUTION: An adaptive power control system of a spread-spectrum transmitter includes a base station having an AGC amplifier (228), a despreader (231), a comparator (239), a power amplifier (237), a delta modulator (235), a multiplexer (234), a combiner (236), and a power measuring device (233); and a mobile subscriber station having a despreader, a demultiplexer, a demodulator, a variable gain device, and a transmitter.
