PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To report the state of a flash ROM before it fails. SOLUTION: In a printer having a flash ROM, when writing data designated from a main control unit 10 to the flash ROM, a memory access process unit 102 obtains a process time from a time measuring unit 104 for each write command to the flash ROM, and compares the process time with a timeout time predefined in a memory characteristic managing unit 106. Then the number of times that the timeout time has been exceeded is recorded.
