PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of highly precisely keeping a belt into a stable state less in eccentricity with few processing burdens. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: a detecting section that detects the widthwise position of the rotating endless belt; a moving section that moves the belt 21 widthwise; and a control section that controls the operation of the moving section based on the detection result of the detecting section so that skew of the belt 21 is corrected. The control section alters the content of the control of the skew correction if there is any change in an external factor (e.g., firm press against another member or release from firm press, or start of the drive of the belt) relative to the belt. For example, until the belt stabilizes after a change in external factor, a control period is made shorter than that for a normal period, or the correction to the eccentricity is increased.
