PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To appropriately select a method for erasing an area outside the manuscript area. SOLUTION: An image processing device 1 is provided with: a scanner part 2 for reading a manuscript to generate image data GD; an edge-neighborhood pixel detecting part 3 for detecting edge-neighborhood pixels GS, GE of the manuscript based on a brightness value of the image data GD generated by the scanner part 2; a histogram producing part 4 for producing a histogram HG by using the brightness value in a predetermined area on the manuscript side on the basis of the edge-neighborhood pixels GS, GE detected by the edge-neighborhood pixel detecting part 3; and a determining part 5 for determining whether or not a manuscript area can be separated from the area outside the manuscript area, based on the histogram HG produced by the histogram producing part 4.
