PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide as a technique of improving a living environment, a charcoal-containing coating composition having an antiseptic and ant-proof effect and having an effect of adsorbing a gas such as VOCs causing sick house syndromes and of controlling humidity and to provide a method for coating therewith. SOLUTION: Provided are a coating composition containing 50-80 wt.% of an aqueous polyvinyl alcohol solution, 1-10 wt.% of natural hibayu (oil from Thujopsis dolabrata), and 10-20 wt.% of a charcoal powder and a method for coating, with the composition, building materials, sill beams, sill beam braces, sleeper beams, floor joists, floor support studs, stud connection beams, or the like; members (excluding externally visible indoor areas) situated 0-1 meter high above the top surface of a sill beam, such as pillars, intermediate studs, diagonal braces, spacing timbers; and window sills; those areas of a mortar-laid lathed substrate which are situated 0 to 1 meter high above the top surface of a sill beam; bathroom frameworks; ceiling substrates or the like; concrete foundations; or the like.
