PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new olefin polymerization catalyst component and an olefin polymerization catalyst for producing a high molecular weight polymer difficult to produce by the conventional Phillips catalyst, and a method for producing an olefin polymer using the same. SOLUTION: The olefin polymerization catalyst is obtained by bringing the following components (A), (B) and (C) into contact with one another; (A): a component selected from clays, clay minerals and ion-exchangeable layered compounds, (B) a specific compound represented by the formula: M(OR)<SB>n</SB>, and (C) chromic acid or the salt thereof, dichromic acid or the salt thereof, or a chromium compound comprising a chromium cation and a halogen ion or the anion of an inorganic or organic acid.
