PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for dividing 4-[4-(dimethylamino)-1-(4'-fluorophenyl)-1-hydroxybutyl]-3-(hydroxymethyl)-benzonitrile to its isolated enantiomers. SOLUTION: This method for dividing escitalopram is provided by making the 4-[4-(dimethylamino)-1-(4'-fluorophenyl)-1-hydroxybutyl]-3-(hydroxymethyl)-benzonitrile which is a racemic mixture or a non-racemic enantiomer mixture, as the salts of (+)-(S,S)- or (-)-(R,R)-enantiomer of O,O'-di-p-toluoyl-tartaric acid, and dividing to its enantiomers by fractionally crystallizing the salts in a solvent system containing 1-propanol, ethanol or acetonitrile.
