PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide methods and compositions for the effective transformation of duckweed. SOLUTION: The methods involve transformation by either ballistic bombardment or Agrobacterium. In this manner, any gene or any nucleotide sequence of interest can be induced and expressed in duckweed plants. There are also provided transformed duckweed plants, cells, tissues. Transformed duckweed plant tissue culture and methods of producing recombinant proteins and recombinant peptides from the transformed duckweed plants are also disclosed.
