The drive unit i.e. hybrid drive (1), has a stirling engine (9) using exhaust gases of an internal-combustion engine (2) as a heat source for driving a generator (10). The stirling engine and the generator form an integral stirling unit (12) i.e. free piston engine, with a stirling section in a common housing in which heat energy is converted into kinetic energy. The stirling unit has a generator section in which the kinetic energy is converted into electricity. A coupling mechanism transfers the kinetic energy directly from the stirling section to the generator section.
