PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase transporting efficiency and to improve productivity by narrowing the distance between sheets in order to absorb the variation at the transportation time in an image forming apparatus with a double-sided printing mechanism. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: a switchback route SR with a branching connection to a circulating type transporting route CR, receiving the sheet from the circulating type transporting route CR and reversing the front and back of the sheet by having the sheet go back and forth to return to the circulating type transporting route CR; a scheduling section 201 for determining a transporting schedule for the sheet in the circulating type transporting route CR and the switch back route SR; a monitoring section 203 for monitoring the transported state of the sheet in the circulating type transporting route CR or the switchback route SR, and a reversal route control section 204b for controlling staying time within the switch back route SR based on the transporting schedule by the scheduling section 201 and the transported state acquired by the monitoring section 203.
