PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet feeder which has sufficient conveyance power to return doubly fed sheets of paper back to a sheet stack tray. SOLUTION: The sheet feeder comprises a conveyance member 104 for feeding the sheets fed from the sheet stack tray 101 to a feeding path, a separator 105 for separating the sheets fed to the feeding path one by one, the separator disposed on the opposite side of the member 104 across the feeding path, a double feed detection means 107 for detecting the double feed of sheets fed to the feeding path, a rotating member 108 disposed near the transfer member 104 for contacting with the multi-ply sheets by means of a certain load when the double feed detection means 107 detects the double feeding of sheets, a driving means rotating the rotating member 108 in the opposite direction to the sheet transfer direction, and a control means controlling the driving means so as to rotate the rotating member 108 in the opposite direction with respect to the sheet transfer direction when the double feed detection means 107 detects the double feeding of sheets.
