Preparation of low melting, biocompatible dextran fatty acid ester, comprises esterifying the dextran or dextran derivative with a carboxylic acid preferably a long chain fatty acid, where the fatty acid for the esterification reaction is activated by the synthesis of iminium chloride and the activated fatty acid and dextran or dextran derivative are reacted preferably in a stew system.
