A channel setup apparatus for a television and a method thereof are provided to set and store a proper screen ratio per a channel of a television, thereby displaying an image signal received at a proper screen ratio during conversion of a channel. A memory(10) stores a screen ratio which a user designates according to each channel. A key input unit(20) receives a channel change request of a user. A microcomputer controls a screen display mode according to a screen ratio of a corresponding channel stored in the memory. A scheduler(50) determines a screen ratio of a broadcasting signal received through a tuner and displays it on a screen.
