A structural sandwich plate member 10 used in marine vessels, off-shore structures and buildings and a method of manufacturing it comprises first 11 and second 12 outer metal plates having a core 14 of plastics or polymer material sandwiched and bonded between the plates 11, 12, and a conduit 15 communicating a temperature controlled medium embedded in the core 14 and is in thermal contact with at least one of the plates 11, 12. Conduit 15 may be arranged in a meandering path (fig 2) and in direct contact with at least one of the plates 11, 12. Conduit 15 may be in direct contact with the first plate 11 over a first part of its length and in direct contact with the second plate 12 over a first part of its length that is different to the first part of the first plate 11 (i.e. in offset arrangement). Conduit 15 may be in direct contact with the first plate 11 and a second conduit 15 communicating a temperature controlled medium may be embedded in the core 14 and in direct contact with the second plate 12. Conduit 15 may be fixed to the plates 11, 12 by a clip fixing member 16. The temperature controlled medium may be heated or cooled water and an electrical resistive heating element may be used in combination. Plate member 10 is manufactured by filling a cavity with uncured plastics or polymer between the plates 11, 12 being spaced apart. |
