[Also in Group XXXIV] A method of making a bearing comprises immersing a bearing blank, having a surface of aluminium, in a bath of soft corrosion - resistant bearing metal such as lead or lead base alloy, abrading the bearing surface while so immersed and thereby forming indentations therein, and withdrawing the blank with the indentations filled with bearing metal, and thereafter finishing the blank to the desired shape and dimensions. In a method of making a bearing surface of aluminium having surface indentations which are filled with lead or a lead alloy, a strip of pure aluminium, aluminium alloy or preferably aluminium bonded to a supporting strip of steel, is passed through a bath 14 of molten lead or lead-tin alloy containing a deoxidizer such as calcium, the bath containing revolving wire brushes 16 which abrade the surface of the aluminium strip. The strip is then passed into a second bath 17 of molten lead or lead-tin in which a revolving knurling roller 18 forms indentations in the aluminium surface. The blank is then immersed in a third bath 20 of the above molten metal in which rollers 22 guide the strip and hold it submerged in the bath. In this bath the previous coating is dissolved and an agitator 20a may be provided to ensure that none remains in the pits or depressions. The strip is then formed to bearing shape and machined until the grid pattern is exposed. With certain modifications, the process may be performed in two baths or only one bath.
