Argon, krypton, and xenon, are obtained in extremely pure form from such gases containing small amounts of impurity, by preparing from the impure gas a clathrate compound of the rare gas with quinol, decomposing the clathrate to liberate the rare gas which is collected. Aqueous quinol is allowed to crystallize slowly in the presence of the rare gas under super-atmospheric pressure and the resultant clathrate compound may be decomposed by heat or solution in e.g. ether or methanol.
