An appliance for supplying a controlled atmosphere to a patient has a chamber 10, in which the patient is supported on a tiltable frame 54, and through which air is .circulated by a fan 25. The air withdrawn from the chamber 10 is first passed into a drying tank 23 which is warmed by a heater 48, and, after passing through the fan 25 it reaches a branch in the conduit so that it may either pass directly through conduit 24 to the chamber 10 or through a humidifying tank 33 and conduit 34. The outlet of either or both of these conduits may be closed to a variable extent by manually operable valves. Heaters 49, 50, 53 are also provided adjacent the branch 28 in the conduit, over the humidifying tank and below the couch 54 and all are controlled by a thermostat 51. A controllable inlet 40 is provided to admit air to replace that lost by leakage and oxygen may be introduced through a pipe 39, the inner end of which feeds into a venturi arrangement in conduit 37, so that it can serve as an air circulating device if the fan motor fails.
