A carbon-consuming battery of cells 44, 46 to which a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide is fed and oxidized to produce current is enclosed in a receptacle 10 to which steam and a carbonaceous material are fed to produce the hydrogen-carbon monoxide mixture, the temperature in the receptacle being maintained by the heat evolved from the battery. Each cell comprises electrodes 32, 34 of different oxides of iron separated by a slab of electrolyte 36 consisting of a glass-like material comprising sodium silicate, monazite sand, tungsten trioxide and sodium carbonate. The walls of the cell container 38 are spaced from the electrodes to form gas passages 40, 42 through which air and the hydrogen-carbon monoxide mixture can be passed from inlet pipes 48 and 64, respectively. The cells in each of the groups 44, 46 are joined in parallel, the two groups being joined in series. The air passes to the pipe 48 from a conduit 50 and passes out from the cells through pipes 52 which lead into the cells of the group 46 from which the air passes out through a conduit 58. The mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide is prepared in the lower part of the vessel 10 which is provided with a grid 18 for supporting carbonaceous material introduced above the grid through a pipe 20. The carbonaceous material may be made by the low temperature carbonization of coal. Steam is passed into the vessel through a pipe 22, the mixed gases resulting from the reaction of the steam and carbonaceous material passing through a separator 24 and pipe 28 into the cells through conduits 64. The gases escape at 74 into a pipe 72 connected to pipe 58 from which the waste gases are discharged to any suitable place. Heat exchange between the pipe 58 and steam-pipe 22 and air-pipe 50 is provided by heat exchangers 64, 66. Current is drawn off from the battery through terminals 78, 80. Instead of using solid carbonaceous materials the mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide may be produced by the interaction of steam and methane in the presence of a nickel-alumina catalyst.
