In a method of controlling a digital photographing apparatus, a first image signal is generated S13 by photographing a subject's face and, when a face is not recognized by a facial recognition algorithm S14, an exposure value is adjusted S15, a second image signal is generated S16, and a face recognition algorithm is performed again S17 on this image signal. Also independently claimed is a digital photographing apparatus comprising: an imaging unit generating an image signal including a face, a face recognizer for processing the image signal, and an exposure controller, controlling an exposure value when a face is not recognized. Exposure values may be increased or decreased relative to a standard exposure value or range; when adjusted, exposure values may be converted to a pulse form. A 'preview mode' can be provided, and the facial recognition algorithm may determine exposure S19 based on the recognized face and generate a further image S20 by photographing a subject under the determined exposure value. Thus, a digital photography apparatus which can recognize a face even in a dark place, such as under a backlight condition, or in too bright a place, is provided. |
