A mobile robot based on a ceiling image and a self positioning method thereof are provided to reduce the manufacturing cost by using a single camera to perceive accurate features for positioning. A mobile robot(10) based on a ceiling image comprises an image input unit(100), an encoder sensing unit(200), an operation unit(500), a control unit(300), a storage unit(400), and a drive unit(600). A self positioning method of the mobile robot includes a step of processing image information inputted through the image input unit, a step of extracting a feature including a door feature based on the image information, and a step of recognizing the location of the mobile robot by using the extracted features.
