An external memory device storing an address book according to the drive of a WIPI application of a mobile communications terminal and a method thereof are provided to prevent difficulty by loss of important information by utilizing the external memory. After a directory WIPI(Wireless Internet Platform for Interoperability) application is downloaded from wireless network, a mobile communication terminal(100) performs a backup function of an external directory memory through a user authentication process according to the operation of the user. According to the drive of the WIPI application of the mobile communications terminal, the external memory device stores the user authentication information and directory information of the mobile communications terminal.
