PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a superconducting quantum interference element that does not require formation of an insulating barrier layer, and to provide a method of manufacturing the same. SOLUTION: The superconducting quantum interference element 10 has a superconducting layer 12, having a ring part 12A and ferromagnetic layers 13, 13 arranged so as to crossover a part of the ring part 12A of the superconducting layer 12. The two ferromagnetic layers 13, 13 cover the ring part 12A, in such a manner to cross over the part 12A. Regions 12B, 12B covered with the ferromagnetic layers 13, 13 of the ring part 12A of the superconducting layer 12 transit from a superconductor (S) to an insulator (I), due to the ferromagnetic layer 13 and become a barrier. According to this structure, the so-called "SIS-type Josephson junctions" are formed at two points, and accordingly, the so-called "DC-SQUID" is configured. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
