PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a document carrier capable of securely carrying a document, and reading the document with favorable precision. SOLUTION: The document carrier is provided with a document thickness sensor 28 provided on the document carrying direction upstream of a reading part 17, a first displacement mechanism 155 to vary the interval between a first carrying roller 13 and a first follower roller 23, and a second displacement mechanism 156 to vary the interval between a second carrying roller 14 and a second follower roller 24 based on the thickness of the document 1. The second displacement mechanism 156 increases the interval between the second carrying roller 14 and the second follower roller 24 based on the thickness of the document 1 immediately before a tip of the document advances in between the second carrying roller 14 and the second follower roller 24, and decreases the interval between the second carrying roller 14 and the second follower roller 24 immediately after the tip of the document 1 advances in between the second carrying roller 14 and the second follower roller 24.
