PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a refractive index sensor and a liquid level sensor capacble of reducing the size and the cost. SOLUTION: The refractive index sensor 101 comprises a container 1 for containing a measuring object 4; a light-emitting element 2 for irradiating the measuring object 4 with light within the container 1; a light-receiving element 5 for detecting the intensity of the light received from the light-emitting element 2 through the measuring object 4 within the container 1; and an arithmetic circuit 8 for calculating a refractive index of the measuring object 4 from the intensity of the light emitted by the light-emitting element 2 and the intensity of the light detected by the light-receiving element 5.
