PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an indirect injection diesel engine and a method of operating the same capable of preventing combustion failure in a subsidiary chamber, capable of reducing particulate matter, and capable of reducing nitrogen oxides. SOLUTION: The indirect injection diesel engine has a fuel injection valve 9 for injecting fuel, forced from a fuel injection pump 8, into a connection hole 7. The diesel engine is adapted such that first a portion of the amount of fuel to be injected at one time in a compression stroke is injected from the fuel injection valve 9 into the connection hole 7 and then the remaining amount of the fuel to be injected at the one time is injected into the connection hole 7 from the fuel injection valve 9 in an expansion stroke.
