<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain, for example, a high contrast of display, in a liquid crystal display. <P>SOLUTION: This projector 10 or the like includes a light source 12 for emitting a light, a liquid crystal panel 15c with a vertical-oriented type liquid crystal comprising a pretilted liquid crystal molecule 51 sandwiched between a pair of substrates having respectively oriented films, for modulating the light, a pair of polarizing plates 15b or the like, and a phase difference plate 15a having (i) the first substrate 1501, (ii) the first vapor deposition film 1501c for holding the first refractive index anisotropic medium, and vapor-deposited vertically on the first substrate to direct the first optical axis of the first refractive index anisotropic medium along a thickness direction, (iii) the second vapor deposition film 1503 for holding the second refractive index anisotropic medium, and vapor-deposited obliquely on the first vapor deposition film, in order to incline the second optical axis of the second refractive index anisotropic medium along a direction of negating a characteristic change of light due to the pretilting. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT |
