PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display apparatus which is thin-shaped, and also, which can display a high-definition image with a wide angle of view by using a plurality of image forming elements and an observation optical system that includes a plurality of optical systems. SOLUTION: The image display apparatus includes: the plurality of image forming elements; and the observation optical system 100 for guiding luminous fluxes from the plurality of image forming elements 21 to 23 to a common exit pupil S and displaying images corresponding to a plurality of original images as images of field areas θ1 to θ3 different from one another in an observation field. The observation optical system includes: at least the first optical system 11 configured to fold in a first section B the luminous flux from the first image forming element 21 among the plurality of image forming elements by using a plurality of reflective surfaces S11 and S12 and to guide the luminous flux to the exit pupil; and second optical systems 12 and 13 configured to fold in a second section A the luminous fluxes from the second image forming elements 22 and 23 by using a plurality of reflective surfaces S21, S22 and S32 and to guide the luminous fluxes to the exit pupil.
