A portable terminal and an operation method for supporting a UART(Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter) and a USB(Universal Serial Interface) communications to single connector by automatically switching the linkage path of the connector. A USB module is selectively connected to a connector. An internal UART apparatus is selectively connected to the connector and communicates with the external universal asynchronous receiver transmitter. Determining units determine whether the external USB apparatus or the internal UART apparatus based on a logic level. A switching unit(130) selectively connects the data lines of the connector to the USB module or the inside UART apparatus based on the determination.
