PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control an electrooptical steepness of a liquid crystal display which contains an alignment layer which can induce vertical or homeotropic alignment that is improved in a liquid-crystalline medium, a liquid-crystal device that contains the alignment layer, and at least one alignment layer by changing the surface fixed energy of the alignment layer. SOLUTION: The homeotropic alignment of the liquid-crystalline medium is achieved by using the alignment layer of a polymerized liquid-crystal material including bar molecule that has a homeotropic tendency, in particular, a layer of homeotropic nematic or homeotropic mectic (A) liquid crystal polymerized material.
